ASU mascot, Sparky getting new look after BIG fan backlash

TEMPE, AZ - Not happy with the new Sparky? Arizona State University is giving Sun Devil fans a chance to make some changes.

In a press release issued Tuesday afternoon, ASU announced they are asking students, sports fans, faculty, and staff to share their thoughts on the updated mascot costume that debuted March 1.

ASU officials said since the new mascot's big reveal, the university has received a lot of feedback regarding the design of the head and face of the costume.

The university says, they are not changing the official image of Sparky, and only intended to use the new mascot in comic books, children's books, animated films, and merchandise and apparel.

ASU is developing an online program that will allow Sun Devil fans to pick the features of the mascot costume's head and face.

The program will be available from April 22 to May 5, 2013.

The university said it plans to notify students, alumni, season ticket holders, donors, faculty and staff for whom it has email addresses for when the program is available.

Voters will be asked to choose the features they like, and submit their selections to the university. Each person will only be allowed to vote once.

The university will reveal the fans' choices for the costume on September 5, 2013, during the first football game of the season.
