Arpaio's office raids Tempe health care business

Thirty-one workers at a Tempe health care business were arrested on suspicion of identity theft as part of an investigation by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office into whether the business hired illegal immigrants.

The sheriff's office says it hasn't determined whether the workers arrested in Thursday's raid at 21st Century Healthcare were illegal immigrants.

Telemundo captured video of workers walking out the business with zip ties on their hands and turning their faces away from the camera.

No one answered the phone at the business when The Associated Press placed two calls there Thursday afternoon.

Over the last three years, the sheriff has raided 58 businesses suspected of breaking a state law by knowingly hiring illegal immigrants. The raids led to civil cases against three employers for illegal hiring and the arrests of about 600 illegal immigrants on criminal charges or immigration violations.

Two-thirds of the immigrants were arrested on identity theft or forgery charges for using fake documents to get jobs. The remaining immigrants were turned over to federal immigration authorities.
