Arizona State University takes legal action against ‘porn' website using similar name

PHOENIX - Arizona State University has reportedly taken legal action to force a website that uses the name "Sun Devil Angels" to shut down, claiming it's violating ASU's trademark.

The website features neither Sun Devils nor Angels but is a hardcore pornographic website.

University leaders told ABC15 the legal action is not a lawsuit, it's an arbitration filing.

ABC15 was told one of the concerns from ASU leaders involves parents of potential students who may look online for school information and land on the porn site.

In documents the entertainment site TMZ says it got hold of, ASU argues that unless Sun Devil Angels is immediately stopped the site could cause "initial interest confusion among Internet users seeking information regarding ASU."

One student told ABC15 he's not surprised by the legal action.

"I don't think it (website) gives it (ASU) a bad name, I think it plays into the stereotype that the university already has, so it's all just pretty much bad all the way around," said David Pender.

ASU also reportedly claims the site features a logo that's somewhat similar to logos used by Arizona State.
