81-year-old Tempe woman dies after red light accident

TEMPE, AZ - An elderly driver of one vehicle involved in a Friday night accident was pronounced dead after her condition worsened at the hospital, Tempe Police reported Saturday morning.

According to Tempe Police, the accident occurred at 9:15 p.m. at 48th Street and Southern Avenue.

81-year-old Tempe resident Elfriede E. Cockrell was driving east on Southern Avenue when she failed to stop for a red light.

Cockrell's Geo Metro collided with a Chevrolet Suburban who was traveling on a green signal, police say.

No individuals in the Suburban were injured.

Cockrell's injuries were originally reported as non life-threatening, but she later died at the hospital after her condition worsened.

Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the accident.
