Pedestrian struck, killed in Tempe light rail accident

TEMPE, AZ - Police are investigating a deadly accident involving a pedestrian and a light rail train in Tempe.

Police say it is unclear how the accident that happened around 12:40 p.m. occurred.

Police say the point of impact was at Sycamore and Main in Mesa. The train was traveling westbound into Tempe.

Tempe police Lt. Scott Smith said an officer was flagged down by a witness in front of the police substation on Apache Boulevard saying there was a body on the tracks. Smith said the victim appears to be a male.

One person emailed ABC15 that they saw the accident scene and that the victim appeared to have had a leg dismembered. Police said there are several areas along the track where they found remains from the victim.

Valley Metro says light rail service was suspended in both directions from Sycamore and Main in Mesa to Priest and Washington in Phoenix for several hours. It reopened around 6 p.m.

Smith says police are looking for any witnesses who can help them determine how the accident happened. Anyone who can help should call Tempe police at 480-350-8311 or call Mesa police who have taken over the investigation.
