Valley 5-year-old one of three in nation to undergo new heart procedure

SAN TAN VALLEY, AZ - London Ethington is not your average 5-year-old. She has been through three open heart surgeries already, her first coming at only 5 days old.

London has a rare heart issue that leaves her with one pumping chamber in her heart instead of two.

This heart problem is now causing a severe respiratory issue. This respiratory issue is extremely rare and causes London to cough up actual casts of her bronchial tube.

“They are very painful to cough up and very scary. There is a risk every time it blocks her airway,” said London’s mother, Shelly Ethington.

The scary nature of London's condition has prompted the Ethingtons to seek out breakthrough treatments. She is only the third person in the nation to try a new eight-hour procedure.

Right now, the family is relying on donations to help fund the pricey operation.

“We’re super thankful that people are so loving and giving to help someone they don’t even know,” said Shelly.

London has since undergone the procedure, but remains in the hospital on her journey to heart health.
