Activists and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office are trying to find the person who shot and killed a wild horse.

The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group said on its Facebook page that a horse was found shot to death Thursday at the Coon Bluff Campground area.

The horse, a 12-year-old mare named Dottie, had been shot four times -- three times in the head and once in the shoulder.

The group says it's possible that this was a "mercy killing" if Dottie was injured. The group also stated someone spotted Dottie just the day before she was found dead and she appeared to be doing fine.

MCSO told ABC15 they are still investigating the incident.

This is not the first time a horse has been shot and killed in this area.

Last year, a horse was found dead as well. It had been shot twice in the chest. Two other horses within the last year were also found with gunshot wounds but survived their injuries.
