Scooter rider dead after morning crash

MESA - A deadly accident Saturday morning caused a closure of the Broadway and Ellsworth roads intersection.

According to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Christopher Hegstrom, a red, four-door sedan was approaching a red light on Broadway Road and failed to stop around 7:40 a.m.

The vehicle reportedly hit a scooter stopped in the median lane at the light and ended up coming to rest after hitting a pole.

The 43-year-old female driver was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. 

The scooter operator, a 52-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is not being released until next of kin is notified.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash.
