Pregnant woman, daughter and mother escape Mesa house fire

MESA, AZ - A woman who is nine months pregnant, her daughter and mother are safe after their home caught fire early Thursday morning.

Authorities said the fire has destroyed the home near 80th Street and University Drive in East Mesa.

Chrystal Castillo said she woke up to her mother screaming and could smell smoke, "I could hear crackling coming from a back room and I saw flames in a light fixture...so I got my 3-year-old out of bed and ran," she said.

Castillo said the fire started in the back of the home and she woke up to her mother screaming.

The women and 3-year-old girl all got out safely.

Colin Williams with Rural Metro Fire Department told ABC15 that crews were forced to fight the fire from outside the home when it became too dangerous to be inside.

Williams said one firefighter was injured after touching a live wire and getting shocked.

Firefighters called the home's electrical wiring "non traditional" and said that it also had exposed electrical cords.

Castillo suspected the wiring may be at fault for the blaze, "We had some issues in that room, so that's what I would figure," she said.

Meanwhile Castillo, who expected to spend the next couple of weeks getting ready for her newborn baby, will have to spend it looking for a home.

"I'm pretty stressed, more worried about where we are going to live at this point," she said.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.
