MESA, AZ - Authorities say a suspect remains hospitalized after being involved in a shooting with Mesa police.
Steven Berry, spokesman for the Mesa Police Department, said the shooting happened at a strip mall near McKellips and Stapley Drive around 6 p.m. Monday.
Berry said officers responded to reports of someone in the back of a closed business with a "long weapon."
When officers arrived, they found a suspect with a shotgun behind the business.
Officers gave the suspect commands to drop the weapon, which he refused, Berry said.
Authorities said the suspect did not communicate with officers and fired at least two rounds. According to Berry, two of the officers fired at the suspect, hitting him.
The suspect was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the suspects actions.
