MESA, AZ - Police arrested a man who is accused of robbing an east Mesa store while armed with a machete.
Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said 26-year-old Steven Joseph Flores was taken into custody Monday evening for robbery and aggravated assault charges.
Around 4 p.m. Monday, officers were called out to the Walmart Neighborhood Market at Guadalupe and Hawes roads just west of Loop 202.
They were told Flores ran away from the store and jumped a wall into a neighborhood, Landato said.
It's unclear at this time what Flores took from the store.
A perimeter was set up in the area and a man was contacted, but he did not initially fit the suspect description, according to Landato. The subject was let go.
Minutes later, the suspect description was updated and officers learned the suspect changed his clothes, matching the description of the man who was just let go.
Police found clothing nearby that matched the first description of the suspect, as well as the machete used in the robbery, Landato said.
The man was no longer walking down the street, so police began searching.
Landato said an officer driving down the street heard a door slam, so police conducted a "knock and talk" at the home.
Flores came out of the home and was arrested after a brief struggle, Landato said. He was taken to the ground.
Officers made contact with the suspect's blood but were not injured, according to Landato.
