PD: Officer unhurt in Mesa police shooting

MESA, AZ - Police say a suspect has died after an officer-involved shooting in Mesa.

According to Mesa police Det. Diana Williams, the shooting took place around 11 a.m. at the Sunland Motel near Main Street and Lindsay Road.

Williams said the officer was not injured.

Police say the incident began when a man walking on Main Street was confronted by another man and words were exchanged.

One man threatened the other with a gun and the victim ran away and called police.

Officers found the suspect with the gun and tried talking to him, but he was still agitated.

Officers tried using a stun gun on the suspect but only one prong hit him.

Police say when the man reached for something in his waistband two officers fired rounds, striking the suspect.

He was taken to a local hospital and went into surgery. He later died.

A weapon was found at the scene.

Police say at this point it is unclear if the two men knew each other or whether either was staying at the motel.

The suspect's name has not been released, but he has been identified as a 22-year-old Hispanic male.
