MESA, AZ - A Mesa police motorcycle officer has been released from the hospital after he was hit by an impaired, wrong-way driver, said authorities.
Steve Berry, spokesman for the Mesa Police Department, said the officer suffered minor injuries after he was hit by an oncoming SUV near Southern Avenue and Country Club Thursday night.
Police officials said they got the driver out of the SUV, but while they were trying to free the injured officer from under the SUV, the suspect ran away. Police later arrested the suspect down the road near a gas station.
Berry identified the suspect as 47-year-old Jose Valdez. He has been booked on one count of endangerment, unlawful flight from law enforcement, and leaving the scene of an injury collision.
Preliminary breath tests showed Valdez had a BAC of .205, over two times the legal limit.
Authorities said DUI charges are pending official blood results.
