GILBERT, AZ - Two people on board a Mesa Police Department helicopter are expected to be OK following an emergency landing around 1:00 a.m.
The incident happened in the area of Stapley Drive & Baseline Road in Gilbert.
The police helicopter was damaged according to Mesa Police Department Sgt. Tony Landato.
"The preliminary information I have is that the pilot did a remarkable job avoiding homes by putting the helicopter down in a field," said Landato. "I've been told, luckily, there are no serious injuries."
Witnesses in the Gilbert neighborhood said the chopper did in fact come close to homes before veering into the field.
It appears the helicopter experienced some sort of mechanical failure but it could take days for investigators to figure out the exact cause.
"They had 10 to 15 seconds from engine failure to impact," said Landato. "The tail section of the helicopter snapped off during impact."
It is likely federal investigators will take over the investigation.
Landato told ABC15 the two people on board included a pilot and observer who suffered minor injuries.
