PD: Man flees traffic stop in Mesa, officer received minor injuries

MESA, AZ - A 37-year-old man is in custody after leading Mesa police on a short pursuit Tuesday morning.

According to Mesa police, a two-man unit pulled over a Toyota truck at 5:10 a.m. near Higley Road and Cicero Street.

Officials said Rogelio Vargas pulled over, but when officers approached the his door he sped off.

When Vargas sped off, one officer was hit by the truck's door and the side of the truck.

The vehicle sped into a neighborhood with speeds up to 60MPH as police followed the suspect.

The truck eventually rolled onto its side near Higley Road and Adobe Street after Vargas took the corner too fast, police said.

Vargas later told police he couldn't remember what happened and that he used a large amount of illegal drugs the night before.

Vargas is being charged with aggravated assault and unlawful flight.

Vargas and the officer hit by the vehicle sustained minor injuries.
