PD: Body in Mesa dumpster identified as 14-year-old Claudia Ann Lucero

MESA, AZ - Police have identified a body found in a Mesa dumpster last week as a 14-year-old girl.

Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said officers got a call for a body found in a dumpster around 12:30 a.m. Friday at the Sun Garden Apartments near Brown Road and Stapley Drive.

On Monday, Landato said the victim has been identified as 14-year-old Claudia Ann Lucero.

She was reportedly last seen at her Mesa home around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

No arrests have been made at this time.

Patty Braxton lives in the apartment complex and called 911 after her neighbors told her that they discovered a body in the dumpster. She said the whole incident has her family on edge, to the point that they don't want to go near the dumpster.

"They don't want to look in there. They're afraid of the dumpster," said Braxton. "They don't know what they're going to find next. They're afraid."

Lucero was a student at Westwood High School. A school official issued the following statement Monday afternoon:

Claudia Lucero was a student at Westwood High School. We have shared the news of her tragic death with the students and staff of the school. Counselors were available today, and will continue be available, for anyone needing to speak with someone.

Landato said investigators are vigorously pursuing all leads in the investigation.

Anyone with information that may help with the investigation is urged to call the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
