Mesa police officer dies in motorcycle crash while off-duty

The Mesa Police Department announced Tuesday that Officer Kurt Allen Carlson died in an off-duty crash Monday in Washington.

According to Mesa police, Carlson was involved in a single vehicle motorcycle accident Monday. Details on what caused the crash have not been released.

A statement from Mesa police said Officer Carlson was a 17 year veteran of the department. He worked as a patrol officer, a Mesa Family Advocacy Center Detective, and since 2007 he was assigned to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

Carlson was the unit trainer for the Airport Unit and trained every current member on airfield driving and airport familiarity.

The Mesa Police Department described Officer Carlson as a dedicated family man, devoted husband and father to two children. 

"Officer Kurt Carlson was an integral part of the Mesa Police Department and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport family. His loss will profoundly affect all of us who were fortunate to share time with him. Please keep his squad, friends, and family in your thoughts and prayers." - Mesa Police Department.
