Mesa police looking for suspect in officer assault

MESA, AZ - Police are asking for the public's help locating a man accused of assaulting a Mesa police officer Wednesday night.

Detectives said the officer was trying to detain the man, who was allegedly panhandling at a Burger King, when the suspect started to fight.

During the struggle, the officer hit his head on the ground and suffered a cut to the back of his head serious enough to require medical care.

Officers said the suspect fled on foot and is still at large.

Police provided pictures of the suspect who was seen at a Circle K at Main Street and Alma School Road with a Hispanic woman just before the incident.

Detectives said the woman is not a suspect, but a person of interest that may help identify the man.

The suspect is described as a black male, 20-25 years old, 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall, 170-190 pounds with a neatly trimmed goatee. He was wearing a bright orange Gap sweatshirt with the hood over his head and blue jeans.

If you have any information regarding this crime, you are asked to contact the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2384.
