Mesa police find man dead in smoke shop

MESA, AZ - Police say a man was found dead Friday in a Mesa smoke shop, and it's being investigated as a homicide.

Mesa police were called out around 1 p.m. to the strip mall on University Drive near N. Extension Road because neighboring businesses heard a commotion.

Detective Steve Berry said a man was walking away from the area when police arrived.

People at neighboring businesses told officers that he was the man who came from the shop where the "commotion" took place, Berry said.

That man took off running, and officers caught up with him at a nearby apartment complex, Berry said.

He is in custody and is being questioned by police.

When officers went into the smoke shop, a man was found dead.

A regular patron of the smoke shop told ABC15 crews on scene that the victim was the owner of the smoke shop. We're checking with police to confirm this information.
