Mesa PD: Man points gun at officers who fire back

MESA, AZ - Two suspects are in custody after a barricade situation Tuesday night at a Mesa apartment complex.

Mesa police spokesman Tony Landato said at around 10 p.m. Tuesday night, officers responded to a domestic dispute at the complex near Horne and Brown Road.

Landato said when officers arrived, they saw through a window, Mandy Fugua screaming for help and a man who appeared to have a holstered handgun on his side.

Police said fearing for the woman's safety, officers forced entry into the apartment. Landato said the man, Daniel Gutierrez, drew his weapon and pointed it at the officers who then fired at the man.

Landato said Gutierrez was able to close the front door and barricade himself inside the apartment with the woman.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m. gas was put into the apartment and both suspects surrendered, Landato said.

Police said Fugua and Gutierrez were not injured in the incident.

According to Landato, both of the suspects live in the unit as a couple.
