MESA, AZ - A man released from prison on Sunday is now suspected in a shooting death that occurred just hours after his release.
According to Mesa Police paperwork, 22-year-old Ignacio Eide Lomeli had been in prison on charges of aggravated domestic violence, parole violations and drug and alcohol use.
After being released on Sunday, he told police he started to drink, then punched an unknown man in the face and stole his money. Police documents show Lomeli then admitted to shooting and killing a different man in what he said was self-defense.
Officers said they found the shooting victim Sunday night inside an SUV with a gunshot wound to the face and another to the back of the head. That victim was pronounced dead at the scene near Broadway Road and Mesa Drive.
Later in the evening, Lomeli turned himself into police as the suspect. The reporting officer said Lomeli had allegedly smoked meth with friends and told them about the shooting. Those friends then convinced Lomeli to turn himself into authorities.
Lomeli told officers he thought the SUV driver had been following him. During a confrontation, Lomeli then allegedly grabbed a handgun and shot the driver at point-blank range, police documents say.
Lomeli said he didn’t know the victim, but thought he saw that the victim had a gun. No gun was discovered with the victim.
Lomeli was arrested and booked on second-degree murder charges, possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence.
The victim’s name has not been released.
