MESA, AZ - Mesa police arrested a man who offered an undercover detective an iPad, iPod and year of free haircuts to kill his roommate Wednesday night.
Mesa police Detective Steve Berry said Devin Almejo placed an ad on Craigslist to purchase a gun to kill his "grandfather" Michael Layde who is actually a close older friend.
"I'm still a little numb I guess. It really hasn't probably sunk in," said Layde when he heard the news.
A detective responded to the ad and met with Almejo near Main Street and Alma School Road just before midnight, Berry said.
Almejo reportedly explained he's not good with guns and agreed to have the detective commit the murder.
Berry said the suspect offered the gadgets and free haircuts as payment for the crime.
According to a police report, Almejo stated the reason he wanted to kill Layde was because he had abused him physically, mentally and emotionally.
"He has never been abused here. Never ever, not at all," claimed Layde.
The report states the two have been living together for the past year.
Almejo was taken into custody on conspiracy to commit first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.
