MESA, AZ - Police say they believe they have found the vehicle involved and have interviewed a "person of interest" after a 3-year-old girl was struck and killed in a Mesa apartment complex parking lot on Sunday.
Sgt. Efren Carmona said the little girl jumped out of the family car and ran into the parking lot as they returned home from church.
Police say the driver of an SUV hit the girl, pulled into the parking lot, turned around and drove past the injured girl as he left the scene.
The driver was described as a white male with blonde hair, between 20 and 30 years old. Police said he was driving a late 1990s or early 2000s white Suburban.
Police say the girl was taken to the hospital where she died.
Sunday night police said they had released the person they were interviewing, but the "possible" suspect vehicle remains in police custody pending the service of a search warrant to process it for evidence.
Neighbors told ABC15 the little girl's father is a single dad raising four children. They also said he is the maintenance worker at the apartment complex.
Police did not expect to have new information until Monday, including the identity of the little girl who was killed.
