A man allegedly says he shot and killed his girlfriend at their Mesa home because she was physically abusive towards him.

On June 16, police were called to a home near Guadalupe and Sossaman roads after Teddy Vanders called 911 and allegedly admitted to killing his girlfriend.

When officers arrived at the home, they located the victim who suffered a gunshot wound to the head, court paperwork stated. Vanders told police that the pair was in an altercation before the shooting occurred.

While at the home, officers also found several unloaded guns, including a loaded revolver which is believed to be the weapon used during the deadly incident, court documents said.

While being driven to the police station by officers, Vanders told them the victim was very abusive and was “acting crazy,” court paperwork said. He allegedly admitted that they had been drinking alcohol the night of the shooting.

The suspect also told police that jail time is better than being allegedly abused by the victim, court documents said.

During the investigation, police reviewed the 911 call made by the Vanders after the shooting. When asked by the operator if the victim was breathing, Vanders allegedly “chuckled” and stated she was dead.

He is charged with murder in the 2nd-degree in connection with the incident.
