Mesa high school teacher Jesse Castellano to retire after 34 years

MESA, AZ - In room 208 at Mesa High School, taking pictures is an art form.

Over the past 34 years, more than 8,000 students have walked into this classroom, always to the same teacher, Mr. Castellano.

Jesse Castellano has been a photography teacher for the past 34 years, specializing in black and white film.

Since the beginning of his career, a lot has changed. "The technology, of course, has changed dramatically," said Castellano.

In a world full of cell phones, Facebook and Instagram, it's the black and white film developed in the darkroom that these students love.

This darkroom is special, because it is the last darkroom in the Mesa School District.

"I just like the fact that I've gotten the chance to experience it," said Mesa High School senior Alex Bartsch.

However, the lights will be going out in this darkroom for good, as Mr. Castellano ends his teaching career right where he started it 34 years ago, in room 208.

"I want to devote more of my time to my own photography, and it's hard to do that when you're juggling a full time position," said Castellano.
