MESA, AZ - The hostage standoff in Georgia prompted local firefighters to prepare for similar situations here in the Valley.
Captain Ken Hall with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department reviewed safety protocol with his crew on Wednesday evening.
"I just want to make sure your eyes are open," he told them, "and you're looking around the scene."
Hall said that firefighters are told to "expect the unexpected."
"We don't always have all the information," he told ABC15. "We only have the information that the caller gives us."
"Firefighter" is frequently named one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in different reports and it is not necessarily because of the injuries related to firefighting.
Hall said most of the calls they respond to are medical emergencies since firefighters are also paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMT).
"Every time we respond to a call," he said, "we really question what we're responding to."
