MESA, AZ - Authorities say one person has died in a multi-vehicle accident in Mesa.
Mesa police say the 27-year-old Matthew Crisp's vehicle was westbound on Broadway Road when he hit the first vehicle at Stapley Drive around 1:30 p.m.
Police Sgt. Efraim Carmona said the victim followed Crisp's vehicle and called police, reporting he was hitting curbs and driving onto the sidewalk.
The vehicle then struck two more vehicles between Stapley and Alma School Road, finally hitting a vehicle with five people inside, including adults and children.
One of those people, Jared Carter, 35, was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other four were taken to local hospitals.
Police say Crisp was unresponsive when removed from his vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
Crisp is facing charges of one count of manslaughter and four counts of aggravated assault.
Police believe drugs were a factor in the crash but are also checking into whether the driver may have suffered a medical condition.
