MESA, AZ - A 36-year-old woman is behind bars after allegedly leaving her two Shepherd-mix dogs in the desert to fend for themselves.
Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Jones said Jamie Rae Sheehan, 36, was arrested Wednesday at her home in east Mesa.
On Monday, horseback rider Susan Andre told a local TV station, she spotted the dogs in the desert east of Mesa weeks ago.
Andre said she was unable to take the animals into her own home, so she had been providing them food and water.
The report was seen by Sheriff Joe Arpaio who sent his deputies to find the dogs and bring them to a shelter.
Jones said deputies were able to find Sheehan by tracing a microchip from one of the dogs
Sheehan has been booked into the 4th Avenue Jail and charged with two counts of animal cruelty.
