Teen arrested for stealing Mesa squad car

MESA, AZ - A 15-year-old has been arrested after allegedly stealing a Mesa squad car early Sunday.

Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said one officer of a two-man unit was at an ambulance where a juvenile from a party was being treated near 2nd Street and Mesa Drive.

Another teen jumped into the patrol car and put it into reverse as an officer tried to grab him from the car.

The 15-year-old hit a parked car, then put it into drive and struck the side of the ambulance with the open door.

Police found the empty vehicle down the street a few minutes later, according to Landato. After setting up a perimeter and using a police helicopter, officers found the suspect hiding in some bushes nearby.

Officers said nothing appeared to be stolen from the vehicle, which did contain a loaded rifle.

No officers were injured.
