MESA, AZ - Firefighters are changing tactics with a fire that's been smoldering near Mesa since Wednesday.
The debris fire sparked Wednesday afternoon in a county island near Loop 202 and McKellips Road and has been burning ever since.
The debris consists of spools, tires and organic material -- including lawn clippings -- that could burn for days, said Rural/Metro Fire Department spokesman Colin Williams.
Authorities said the plan had been to let the fire burn itself out.
Firefighters are now actively fighting the fire with heavy machinery and water.
So far there is no word on what sparked the fire which at times has sent smoke drifting over the freeway.
There's no water in the area so crews are having to bring it in by tanker truck to fight the fire.
Air15 video showed that a large portion of the fire appears to be out, but that a pile of debris continues to burn and put out thick white smoke.
