Southbound lanes of Loop 202 were shut down early Tuesday morning after a serious and possibly weather-related crash.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says a Mazda Miata and several other vehicles wrecked on Loop 202 San Tan near Elliot Road around 5:40 a.m.

DPS says multiple people were injured, including one person who was left in critical condition.

Air15 video from the scene showed crashed cars in several lanes, including the Miata with extensive damage at rest in the middle lane.

The freeway was shut down while crews worked to extricate an occupant in one of the cars and clean up debris.

Heavy rain was reported in the area around the time of the crash and according to information from the scene, one of the vehicles reportedly hydroplaned on the slick pavement beforehand.
