Kids safe after Mesa school bus catches fire

MESA, AZ - Authorities say all students on a bus that caught fire were evacuated safely.

The school bus caught fire near Brown Road and Country Club Drive in Mesa on Thursday morning.

Mesa fire Capt. Forrest Smith said it appears an electrical fire started in the engine compartment and worked its way over to the bus itself.

He said the driver saw smoke coming from the communications radio and quickly pulled off the road.

Four children, the driver and an assistant were safely taken off the bus as the fire spread.

Smith said another bus was brought in to take the students to school. The children are students with disabilities from Mesa public schools, Smith said.

School officials and Mesa police also responded to the scene.
