Juan Nino identified as man shot by US Marshal in Valley Food City parking lot

MESA, AZ - A man remains hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries after being shot by a deputy U.S. marshal in the parking lot of a Food City grocery store.

Phoenix police say 24-year-old Juan Nino was shot Monday as a Marshals Service team was moving to arrest him in the theft of a gun from a Pinal County sheriff's vehicle.

Police say Nino was shot after he made furtive movements and officers found a gun.

Officials said the man who was driving the vehicle, 24-year-old Cosso Juarez, was arrested for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Authorities said no officers or law enforcement personnel were injured.

The sheriff's deputy left his department-issued weapon in a marked patrol car outside his San Tan Valley home and it was stolen Jan. 22.

Officials said the unidentified deputy violated department policy by leaving his weapon in the vehicle.

Authorities said they are conducting an internal investigation of the incident.
