MESA, AZ - The Chicago Cubs will soon have a new winter home in the East Valley.
The city broke ground Wednesday morning on a $99 million stadium which is expected to be completed in 2014.
It's located on Dobson Road just south of the Loop 202, near the Loop 101 interchange.
The new stadium will take design cues from Chicago's Wrigley Field and will also feature Arizona State University-inspired designs.
That's because ASU and the Cubs are in talks to house the University's baseball program at the new facility as well.
Funding for the ballpark will come from the taxpayers and was approved by voters in 2010.
The Phoenix metro area is home to one of the largest populations of Illinois transplants in the country, which should provide a solid crowd for spring training games.
