MESA, AZ - An attempted robbery at a Mesa Walgreens was foiled Wednesday by two men who both felt the same urge to help.
It happened at the corner of Lindsay and McKellips roads around 1:10 p.m.
Mesa police said 30-year-old Piotr M. Zwolinski walked into the drugstore covering his face with his collar, went to the register and demanded money.
The cashier coughed up the money, but the transaction wasn't over yet.
"I saw her (the cashier) hand the guy a wad of twenties and I knew what was happening," said Dustin Hollander who tackled the robbery suspect to the ground.
The two were scuffling when Jacob Heward stepped in to help.
"I heard him yell 'stop him' and the guy ran right past me," Jacob said.
The men fought with the robber for a while. Dustin took the lead while Jacob grabbed the wad of cash from his hand. "My wife is a cashier and if she was getting robbed I would want someone to step up for her," Dustin said.
Police arrived quickly and took Zwolinski away. They do not believe he was armed during the robbery.
Authorities said no money was taken and nobody was hurt.
Jacob is a young man saving for college and Dustin is a young man looking for a job.
Mesa police don't suggest stopping a robbery in progress, but plan to honor the two men for their bravery.
