Cities around the Valley are encouraging residents to ditch the car keys and hop on a bike on Wednesday.

Mesa's Earth Day Expo and Bike2Work Day event is set for April 20, with the main event taking place at Mesa City Plaza.

Environmentally friendly ideas and activities will come together with a sausage and pancake breakfast, $3 Jamba Juice smoothies, free Starbucks coffee and tea and more. All proceeds will benefit Helen's Hope Chest in Mesa.

Mesa's Transportation Department says its employees are being urged to ride their bikes to work on Wednesday. The department with the most people participating will take a trophy back to the office.

Bicyclist-friendly ways don't stop on Wednesday, though. April is Valley Bike Month and other cities will continue to participate with fun events today and through the end of the month.

Phoenix and Maricopa County are also hosting a downtown bike-to-work ride starting at 7 a.m. Scottsdale and Tempe are also participating.

Local businesses are also joining in by offering freebies and deals on food and goods.

If you want to participate in any of the events, take out your tennis shoes and helmet, and get a fresh start to your work (or weekend) day. The City of Mesa has a map of bike trails and more tips here.
