Fire in Mesa kicks up huge smoke plumes Saturday

MESA, AZ - A large fire was reported in Mesa early Saturday afternoon, prompting several firefighters to respond and fight the blaze.

ABC15 reporter Pete Suratos says a building appliance business caught on fire around 12:30 p.m. PVC pipe, fiberglass, water heaters and other building materials fueled the fire, according to a Mesa Fire Department spokesperson.

According to an ABC15 viewer, she was in the area when she saw the fire before crews arrived and soon called 911.

Mesa Fire Department crews arrived on scene near Southern Avenue and Pima Road. It was determined that the fire was a first alarm blaze.

A nearby skating rink, Skateland, was evacuated.

Large clouds of smoke could be seen in the area and near the highway, prompting nearby residents and people driving by to worry about the incident.

Luckily, another ABC15 viewer said that the fire appeared to be under control and almost extinguished around 1 p.m.
