MESA, AZ - Authorities have a suspect in custody after a man was killed while riding his bicycle in the East Valley Friday afternoon.
Rural Metro Fire Department spokesman Colin Williams said they received a call around 4:50 p.m. that a male on a bike had been hit by a vehicle on Main Street near 83rd Place.
The caller reported that the victim was deceased.
Maricopa County Sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom said the driver of the vehicle fled the scene.
According to Hegstrom, witnesses told investigators they saw the driver of a commercial pickup truck weaving eastbound on Main Street.
They said the driver then swerved across three lanes of traffic, hitting the bicyclist.
Witnesses were able to get a license plate number from the vehicle and MCSO tracked the suspect down.
Hegstrom says the 27-year-old driver faces a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He said the suspect was driving a vehicle for the company he works for.
ABC15 is not identifying the suspect as he has not yet been formally charged.
Hegstrom did not release the name of the victim.
