PD: 2-year-old dies in Mesa drowning

A child hospitalized after a drowning call has died.

Mesa fire said the incident happened at a home near Hawes and McKellips Roads on Friday morning.

According to Mesa firefighters, the grandma was watching the two-year-old boy when there was a lapse in supervision. The child was able to make it through an unsecured gate and entered the pool.

The grandma was able to pull the boy from the pool and started CPR until officials arrived.

Once firefighters arrived they took over rescue efforts and the child was was transported to the hospital in serious condition. Mesa police said the child was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Officials said the drowning was ruled accidental and said the grandmother would not be charged.
