MESA, AZ - Two people were arrested after police forced their way into a Mesa apartment and found drug and other dangerous items within reach of a young child left alone in the living room.
Officers responded after the grandmother of the couple's two children called police to check on them because she couldn't reach their mother by phone.
The grandmother reported the mother had a drug abuse problem.
When officers responded to the apartment near Brown Road and Country Club Drive they saw lights and the television on inside but could not get a response when they knocked on the door.
A neighbor told police they'd seen the mother and children at home earlier and when all attempts failed to reach the mother the officers forced their way inside.
According to a Mesa police report, officers found two small children alone and asleep on the living room floor.
The mother and father of the children, Crystal Driver and William Exley, were located in a rear bedroom behind a locked door.
Both said they'd taken something to help them sleep and said they didn't hear the officers at the door.
Neither could explain why the children were alone in the living room.
Mesa firefighters checked on the children who were found to be fine.
Police said drug paraphernalia and other dangerous items were found in the reach of the 2-year-old.
Both the mother and father were taken into custody and booked into jail for endangerment.
The two children were taken by Child Protective Services workers.
