Crash causes traffic backup on US 60 in Mesa

MESA, AZ - A serious accident caused a huge traffic backup on the US 60 in the East Valley Thursday.

The right eastbound lane at Gilbert Road was closed until 6:30 p.m., causing a huge headache for commuters.

In video from Air15, a van was seen to have crashed through the bed of a pickup truck, up to the truck’s cab.

Mesa Fire Department Capt. Forrest Smith said four cars were involved in the chain reaction crash.

Smith said two cars were involved in a fender bender and a third vehicle stopped to give assistance. The third vehicle was then struck by the van.

Smith said six patients were being treated with at least three suffering critical injuries.

He said the most seriously injured patients transported were between the ages of 17 and 19.

The Department of Public Safety will investigate the crash.
