Burglar breaks in through business roof in Mesa

MESA, AZ - A burglar is headed to jail after police caught him trying to break into a Mesa business Tuesday morning.

Police say the incident happened around 10 a.m. at a strip mall near Main Street and Stapley Drive.

Authorities say the man went up on the roof of the building, peeled back the A/C unit and created enough space to get in the building.

Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned and surveillance video shows footage of the roof collapsing inside a Cricket Wireless Store.

The video shows the burglar's feet dangling, holding on to what looks like a harness to pull himself back up.

From there, he was able to get back into the roofing area and crawl to the roof of a nearby smoke shop.

In the smoke shop, police noticed that one of the ceiling tiles was removed and when they searched the building, they found the burglar hiding in the back storage room.

Mesa police spokesman Tony Landato said, "It's not common that we actually get to catch somebody, so we're very thankful that we were able to do that."

Police also said a police canine was used for the search. The man was bitten by the dog during the search and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Once treated, Landato said he will be heading to jail.
