Back-to-school safety tips: Specific guidelines for parents bringing students to school

MESA, AZ - With schools in Mesa, Scottsdale, Peoria, and Gilbert all opening back up Wednesday it's a major back-to-school day across the valley.

With all those students going back to school, transportation officials want everyone to pay extra special attention out on the roads.

Mesa transportation educator Ashley Barinka said there are some easy ways to make sure your child gets to school safely:

- School Zone = No phone zone

- Use crosswalk and sidewalks

- Lead by example, if you want your child to wear a bicycle helmet you should wear a bicycle helmet.

- Teach children to look left, right, then left again before crossing the street.

"Put the cell phones down and just be vigilant when you are driving. If you see a child is trying to cross the street make eye contact with that person who is trying to cross the street so both of you know what is going on," said Barinka.
