MESA - Authorities say they have found the body of a 10-year-old girl who drowned at Saguaro Lake, northeast of Phoenix Sunday afternoon.
Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say three girls under the age of 15 were in the lake near Butcher Jones Beach when their uncle noticed them in distress.
MCSO spokeswoman Lisa Allen says the uncle pulled out two of the girls, but their 10-year-old cousin did not make it out.
"There were three of them. The raft flipped over. One of them went under the water and never came up," said Lt. Chad Brackman with MCSO.
"We saw her playing around all happy, and all of a sudden they say she was the one that was missing," said Esmeralda Valencia who watched the scene unfold.
Officials say the 10-year-old was under water for at least three hours before her body was recovered approximately 50 yards off-shore.
People visiting the lake were evacuated from the water while dive crews conducted their search. Deputies say they were let back in around 5:30 p.m.
Allen says the other girls appeared uninjured.
Authorities say the children were part of a Phoenix family spending Easter Sunday at the lake.
