"Power wheels" therapy gives kids with disabilities specialized fun, mobility

GILBERT, AZ - At a Valley therapy center, a kids toy is turning into a powerful healing toy.

Advanced Therapy Solutions of Gilbert is giving about a dozen power wheels to kids with various disabilities.

"It is about hope," said Angela Dugan, whose 6-year-old daughter has Cerebral Palsy.  "Mobility is so important.   This lets her connect with her cousins and just be a kid."

The ride-on toys were specially rigged for each child's specific disability with the help of Seton Catholic's robotics team.

"I have one child who is working on raising their head so we had the power button placed behind the head to make it move," said Melanie Conatser who is an occupational therapist.  "It helps with physical therapy but also with social interactions and gives them a sense of independence."

The center will hold a "Kids In Motion Derby" on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Advanced Therapy Solutions at 690 E. Warner Road, Suite 105 in Gilbert.

The kids will get to take the power wheels home.
