Maricopa County boarding facilities not regulated

GILBERT, AZ - As national outrage grows after the death of 20 dogs at a boarding facility, Maricopa County Animal Control wants to remind people it's their responsibility to make sure their pets are in good hands.

The animal boarding industry isn't regulated in Maricopa County.

Melissa Gable with Maricopa County Animal Control says it's important to inspect any boarding facility -- with the same mindset you take when choosing a daycare.

Gable says ask detailed questions about staffing, especially about their ratio of employees to the number of dogs.

"Look at the staff are the staff kind are they compassionate are they trained?" said Gable.

Also ask what the business' protocol is regarding an emergency?

The owners of the dogs who died last weekend, weren't notified immediately.

One of owners even says he was initially told his dog ran away -- not that it died

Gable says if you feel unsure -- don't settle. After all, you’re the biggest advocate for your four-legged friend.
