Man dies after Saturday altercation with police

GILBERT, AZ - Gilbert Police reported Sunday that a suspect has died after an altercation with officers early Saturday morning.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a complex near McQueen and Guadalupe roads around 3:30 a.m Saturday after callers reported a potential domestic disturbance.

Callers told police there was a naked man in the complex courtyard yelling for help.

Officers arrived on scene and the man began to assault the officers attempting to detain him. He had to be Tasered several times.

The man, identified as 34-year-old Daniel Best, a Gilbert resident, was taken into custody but was later taken to the hospital after showing signs of medical distress, police say.

Best died at the hospital Sunday.

An investigation determined that the disturbance was connected to an altercation between Best and his wife, as originally believed by callers.

He is also believed to have been under the influence of cocaine at the time.

The cause of death is still under investigation.
