Gilbert resident Cody Vasquez, 12, to represent Arizona at White House kid's state dinner

GILBERT, AZ - His exceptional eye for cooking may be that of a professional chef, but this guy is only 12 years old and the White House has noticed his talents.

Gilbert resident Cody Vasquez caught the attention of the First Lady with his delicious recipe for shrimp tacos and watermelon jicama salad.

Vasquez will be representing the state at the annual kid's state dinner at the White House. Fifty-four kids will be visiting Michelle Obama and presenting their recipes at the dinner on July 18.

The dinner is part of Obama's "Let's Move" campaign to get kids active and healthy. Recipes submitted to the challenge must be nutritious and follow guidelines on what each meal should incorporate.

ABC15 got to talk with Vasquez Saturday morning and check out what Vasquez had to offer.

He prepared delicious shrimp tacos with a greek yogurt and jalapeno sauce, fresh avocado and cabbage, along with his famous watermelon jicama salad.

Vasquez told us he got the idea for the salad after visiting a farmer's market, picking up a fresh watermelon and wanting to make something special out of it.

Other winning recipes from around the country include veggie pancakes, quinoa lentil burgers, maple-pecan salmon and turkey tacos.
