Father loses three loved ones in Gilbert shooting

Less than 24 hours after the Gilbert shootings , Hugo Mederos made the cross-country trek to be by his daughter's side.

Brittany Mederos was the sole survivor in the Wednesday shooting, which left five people dead, including accused shooter J.T. Ready, who investigators believe shot himself.

Mederos lost three relatives in the murder-suicide: his former wife Lisa Mederos, his daughter Amber Mederos, and Amber's young daughter, Lilly.

At one point in the day, Mederos was seen inside a black SUV with his face in his hands.

With little strength, he talked to reporters.

"First question is why, why…you ask God why," he told reporters from inside the car.

Mederos now lives in Florida and flew in Thursday morning.

His daughter, Brittany, was inside the home when shots were fired.

"She called me, she said 'Dad, you know I heard the screaming, the baby screaming', I can't imagine she had to walk through the blood," Mederos said.

Mederos told friends he was looking forward to Amber's 24th birthday in September.

A trip to Disney World was in the works, a friend said.

As for the suspected shooter, J.T. Ready, Mederos said they met once.

He always thought Ready may be a racist, but never knew he had links to Neo-Nazi groups and was running for Pinal County Sheriff.

"I can't even imagine what went on," said Kristyl Kirkman, who has been to the home countless times.

Kirkman is a friend of Amber and she recalled planning a play date with their two daughters.

"That's really heartbreaking. All this is just really heartbreaking and I don't know why somebody would be so cruel to do this to good people," Kirkman said.

She and Amber met while in their high school band.

Kirkman said Amber was trying to get her life together.

"I want to call her, have her pick up and be like, nice joke. But it's not. It's not a joke. It's not a joke at all," Kirkman said.
