House of Heroes Arizona hosting benefit concert to help Valley vet with home renovation costs

CHANDLER, AZ - Buying a house is all about fulfilling dreams -- deciding what to paint, which carpet to change and even planning where the kids will play in the backyard.

However, one Valley family's dreams were quickly set back shortly after they moved in, despite having a thorough inspection.

Crystal and Gino Garcia found the perfect brick house in a Chandler neighborhood. This was going to be the home they finally settled down in.

"I thought this was the house I could have my grandkids in," said Gino, who was finally ending a career in the Army.

Shortly after moving in, Gino began normal household renovations, pulling up base boards and peeling paint off the walls, when the problems emerged - mold.

"It was scary because every time they opened a wall it was just more mold. More mold and the price was just going up," Gino said.

The mold led to the discovery of other issue including asbestos, structural and electrical issues, and problems with the foundation

The total cost of the renovations is close to $150,000.  Gino says the stress of dealing with this is far greater than his two tours overseas.

A local group, House of Heroes Arizona, is holding a benefit concert to help raise money for veterans, like Gino, to assist with obtaining the materials needed for the renovation. They have the volunteers who are willing to help put in the work.

A benefit concert is being held April 17 at Higley Arts. Proceeds go to help families like Gino’s.
